Morning Sky

This morning I chose to paint just the sky, since everything else looked boring in comparison.

Grey Morning

This morning was very quiet and the sky was grey.  Perfect background for the warm trees.

Daisies and Lanterns

My daisies are still blooming even after we had a snow storm.  I added the chinese lanterns to give it a "fall" touch.

By the Culvert 2

I wasn't entirely satisfied with yesterday's painting, so I went back and tried again.  This time using a different format and a limited palette.  I like the scene, I just don't feel that I'm capturing what I want to show.  There might be a number 3 in the near future.

This was a very colorful scene, I had to tone down the colors and eliminate a lot of brush to get an uncluttered picture.

Don't Rock the Boat

Not a good idea to paint boats on a windy day, but I just loved this scene.

Chinese lanterns

Chinese lanterns are, to me, as much a reminder of fall as apples and turning leaves.  They also remind me of my friend Audrey, because we picked these in our walks.

Orchids

An artist, don't remember who, said that he did not truly see something until he drew it.  Nothing could be truer when it comes to orchids.  I always thought they were beautiful, but it wasn't until I painted one that I realized how amazingly symmetric they are.  Exquisite petals precisely arranged again and again.  Every flower is perfect!!
I have painted many orchids and never feel that I have done them justice.  Next time you see one, look closely, you'll be amazed.

Fall Colors 3

There's this crooked tree across the lake that I just love to paint.  This was done around 7 this morning when everything was very still.

Marshes in the Fall

I was very happy to be painting in my favorite spot today.  The green of the marshes has turned to gold.

Fine Crystal, Cheap Wine

I started this painting in the morning, got sidetrack, picked it up again in the afternoon.  I think this is as finished as it's going to be.

Later Sunset

This is the second painting. I decided on a vertical composition to add a little variety.
The sun was very low in the horizon and everything was bathed in an orange glow.  The blank area on the lower right hand corner is where my thumb was holding the canvas as it got very windy.  Did I mentioned cold?

Earlier Sunset

I had a little more time today, so I painted 2 sunset scenes about one half hour apart.
This is the first one, the sun was still high on the sky and it was blinding.  I wasn't sure how the painting was developing because I couldn't see very well.  I was just trusting my intuition that the values and colors were correct, or close enough.  I was pleasantly surprise when I got home and saw the end result.

I came home with a nasty cold, not that I ever had a nice one, and this is as creative as I can get.

Mug

This mug had other things around, but I didn't like the arrangement after I was done, so I got rid of it.

Morning Mist

I read that Claude Monet (1840-1926), used to get up before dawn to paint the early morning mist in the Seine. I understand why,  I too get up very early to paint the serenity of the water at this time.

Early Snow

It looks nice to have the fall colors and snow colors together in a painting. The damage that such an early snow storm caused, however,  is not nice.

Couch and Screen

Somebody once told me, as a positive comment, I'm sure, that I paint all different subjects.  I knew that wasn't accurate; I don't paint interiors.  Reason being that if I'm setting up my portable easel, I want to be outdoors.  Well, I don't want to be outdoors in this wet, snowy day.  And my couch looked so inviting, that I decided to paint it.
I found this painting somewhat difficult, the colors are all very similar and there isn't a lot of value changes. I must talk to my decorator.   On top of that, perspective comes into play.  So, here is my very first interior painting.  More will follow; soon, if it doesn't stop snowing.

Nocturne

No pretty sunset today, but it was a beautiful night.
I know, the buildings are crooked, maybe I'll fix them, most likely I won't.  I like the picture, it captures the mood of the moment.

Fall Colors

The beauty of fall is short lived; got to enjoy it while it lasts.
About the craft, I had a hard time making the reds recede into space, I guess because it's been a while.  Well, practice makes perfect, they'll get better.

Rose in a Glass Jar

I didn't feel much like painting today, so of course, I had to pick something not so simple.  The unusual format is because I couldn't make up my mind where to crop the composition.  I chose to include everything.

Cloud Study # 3

These clouds rolled in around noon, very pink and soft.  A landscape painter cannot do too many cloud studies.

With the days getting shorter, I might not catch a sunset next week.  If this is the last one for a while, I don't mind, I like this one the best.

Teacup with Rose

I painted this early today, I think it needs another rose to complete the composition.  I would place it in the lower right corner.

Blue & Yellow Still Life

I'm not sure where I'm going with this, just experimenting with patterns and colors.  The only thing I do know is that I don't want my paintings to be too formal, or too detailed.  It's not important to me to accurately describe what I see.

Battery Park #7: In the Rain

This one takes the price for the most difficult painting experience. Rain, wind and a broken umbrella made it less than ideal, but looking at New Jersey, there was a beautiful sky.   Those are raindrops you see.

Beach Sketches:#8, Fall Day

It's said that every day is a gift, I may not always agree with that, but today certainly was.
The sky was hazy, the water and the horizon blended together.  The ocean was calm, rolling peacefully onto the shore; no more tourists, no threatening storms far away; just the fishermen, the walkers and that strange woman painting.

Cracked Glass Vase

Obviously, the wet on wet technique did not work here.  I'll give it some time to dry and try a different approach.

The Tree

This painting is all about the tree.  I wanted to make it come forward.  I know what needs to be done to accomplish this, in theory.  Maybe a few more tries.

Battery Park Series: #6 Sunset

Daniel Da Silva

Painting today was a double treat.  First because the sunset was beautiful with an orange sky reflecting on the water and bouncing off the buildings. And..because a friend and atelier mate decided to come out with me and paint.  It was really nice having company, thanks Daniel!!

More Daisies

As long as they keep blooming, I'll keep on painting them.
It was difficult painting  daisies against the natural light of a window; I had to make them dark, but my mind kept wanting to paint them white.

Roses in Glass Vase
